“Check yourself before you wreck yourself” by Ethan Kopsch
Why is it so important to work on our balance? Balance training is a very important part of your exercise program. Balance training can reduce the incidence of injuries to the ankle, knees, hips, back and upper body. I always here stories of people getting injured. When I ask them how it happened most of them tell me they were simply walking and lost balance leading to them twisting the ankle. Our bodies have three different balance centers which are our eyes, our ears and the nervous system. These systems work together to supply tons of information from their surroundings so the muscles and joints can make appropriate adjustments for proper balance. So when was the last time you checked your balance? Some of us spend some time doing single leg exercises or using balance trainers such as dyna discs or bosu balls. Most of the other balance trainers do not provide a progression from the linear and lateral movements. This leads me to the Indo Board Balance Trainer. You can use the movement of the Indo Board with the roller or the IndoFLO cushion. My advice to you would be to start with the IndoFlo cushion before stepping on to it with the roller. If you do happen to use the roller first be sure to have something to hold on to. The Indo Board was designed for surfers to train when they weren’t in the water. Basically the more you strengthen your legs the better you’ll be at surfing. Once I noticed the Indo Board was being used in Health and Fitness I knew I had to be part of it. I always enjoyed rocking back and forth with the roller trying to maintain my balance. Then I started seeing videos of people adding weights, resistance bands and even the TRX Suspension Training System into their balance training with the Indo Board. I started this form of training, let me tell you, I felt muscles working that I have never felt before. So if you’re bored with your current exercise program add some balance training in with it. I guarantee your muscles will be happy. The Indo Board is something many of you will become more familiar with at Wave House Athletic Club. If you want to give the Indo Board a try stop by and see me sometime at the Personal Training office upstairs.

Healthy Family By Heather Evans
Last week, my mother and grandmother flew out to visit from Minnesota. Grandma stayed for 4 days and mom was in for the long haul with a 10 day visit. My plan for their visit was to introduce everything that is wonderful about San Diego and California from fresh top quality foods to outdoor activities. I even planned for my nutritionist, Heather Fleming, to take us around Henry’s and help us prepare for a healthy picnic we were about to have on the beach.
We did some touristy things, like the San Diego Zoo, but a majority of our trip was spent talking, cooking and being outside. They fell in love with the weather, despite how chilly it would get when the sun would set. Yes, my family from the tundra even thought our nights were cold! The best part of their trip, in my opinion, is how good they felt being here. I give credit to the ocean air, fresh veggies and fruits, walks and sunshine. Being able to eat healthy meals together and do activities together not only helped us as individuals feel amazing but it brought us closer as a family. I’ve been away from home for 2 years now with minimal opportunities to fly back. Having them here to witness and participate in my new and healthy world was the greatest gift. Why am I sharing this with you? Because I want you to take a day or a period of time to eat and walk with your family. The relationships we build are more important than anything else we do in this world. If you want ideas for healthy meals, check out the Wave House Newsletter for recipes. As for activities, go to the beach, Kate Session’s Park, Cabrillo Monument or La Jolla Shores. We are so blessed to live in paradise. Get out there and enjoy it. I promise you it will be worth every minute. Be Well.Heather Evans
Why WHAC? By Heather Evans
About a year ago, I was hired to be on the personal training staff here at the Wave House Athletic Club (WHAC). I knew this club was selective in hiring the best and this was actually my 2nd attempt at getting a job here. It was the greatest compliment of my professional career in personal training.
Before the hire, I was working for a different gym, a corporate gym, and was extremely unhappy. I was nothing more than a number at this other facility and I was expected to meet quotas rather than focus on the needs of the individuals coming to me for health advice. After meeting Tyler Nichols and the rest of the staff at WHAC, I knew I would not have such ridiculous demands placed on me. It was an incredible relief to be able to work where the #1 goal is to create the best plan or program for the individual. This gym is beyond dedicated to serving it’s members. I’ve witnessed time and time again our membership counselors, front desk personnel, managers and personal trainers cater to individual needs from working with financial hardships to offering new and innovative group exercise classes. I feel this is what makes us so special and allows us stand out from the rest of the gyms in the area. I hope you love our club as much as I do. If you have a memebership and haven’t been here in awhile, know that we miss you and want to help YOU! Come on in and see what’s new. Be Well.Heather Evans
Hello friends. Im back in action with the camera back in the works. That being said with work and life (I’m also training to become a yoga instructor :) I have less time than ever to cook and eat right. Tonight I blew through Trader Joes and instead of buying raw chicken I took the easy route - pre cooked chicken strips. Awesome.
To be honest with you all, I’m a pretty picky meat eater. I don’t like strange texture and you give me an awesome piece of fish or tofu, I’m a happy girl. To be clear, I know not everyone is like me and as a result, I cook other things. OK. So. This already cooked chicken is clean and cut and wondrous.
As illustrated in the step by step photos, I sprayed some Pam on a pan added the chicken and turned the burner on low. I immediately added some tomatoes and my lovely Passage Foods Simmer Sauce, in this case Thai Basil and Sweet Chili. After a few minutes of warming on low, I folded in some spinach leaves for color and added nutrients. Just a few more minutes and some brown rice later, I had myself a meal. Jealous? You should be…but you don’t have to be. Get into the Passage.

What do we want out of life? By Michael Omar
For me, I could use a mansion, a private jet, a sports car, a huge lifted truck, free fuel, and an unlimited supply of California burritos. Give me that and im set. Good to go. Down like a clown.
But Is that what I really want? I mean think about it dude. Everything mentioned are all things that are artificial or created. They are all things and not feelings. What do we want more, to feel good, or to have things that make us feel good? Maybe just like every new toy, it will bring you joy at first and then it gets old. The happiness you receive from this “thing” doesn’t last forever and you’re left with this void that must be filled again and again with other things.
Can we feel good without things? Do bums feel good? Is it possible to feel good all the time? Do we have to feel sad in order to feel happy? I’m not sure about any of these questions, but what I do know, is that we all want to live in each others’ happiness. Nobody wants to be around someone that’s sad or depressed. If you have a human body, then listen up…..your body cannot feel happy, unless you exercise. It’s a simple proven fact, your body cannot feel good naturally without exercise. I’m telling the truth. It’s a fact. Please do your own research if you doubt me. Don’t waste your time on energy drinks, get off your lazy butt and run, walk, push, pull, roll, spin, twist, and jump. Have some fun that doesn’t involve sitting and your body will feel better. Pinky swear.

Why do I choose the Wave House Athletic Club?
Well that’s easy. I think we sometimes forget. This is where people come to visit on holidays, spring break and the summer months. This is where they are updating their Facebook status bragging how beautiful is here while their friends or family are shoveling snow somewhere. They decide to spend their hard earned money to come hang out at Belmont Park, the beach, all the Wave House restaurants, Flow Rider, etc.. When I moved here I joined a few different gyms, …..well they were more like meat markets. I don’t think health and fitness is what they really focus on there, but that’s another story. A few months after we moved here we had some visitors in town. We had heard about the Wave House, so we decided to take them down. I think we ended up spending all day around the Flow Riders as MTV was filming their Mountain Dew Parkour Challenge commercial. We decided to try the Flow Rider the next day (which I highly recommend trying). We were told you get a discount on riding if you’re a member of the Wave House Athletic Club. What? They have a gym here and a pool? I checked out the gym and loved it. I think going to the beach to work out makes it a little easier to get that much needed workout in. I think the positive energy in this place is infectious. It’s very difficult to be in a bad mood around here. I now work at Wave House Athletic Club as a Personal Trainer and TRX Suspension Training Instructor. So when you see me at the gym or in the Personal Training office don’t be afraid to say hello.

Shake it Like a Polaroid Picture!!
Its almost 5pm … Most of Corporate America is watching the clock slowly tick away until that miraculous time arrives when they can leave! Their energy is going, they are getting excited for their Friday night plans. A new outfit has been purchased, new shoes are bought and they are ready to go. Maybe they are heading to a birthday party, perhaps a club, or maybe are just aimlessly heading out with a few friends in hopes of a fun adventure to take place. Whatever it may be, their fun probably doesn’t start until 8 or 9. So, what do you do for those few hours in between??? ZUMBA!!! Zumba is the new Latin fitness dance craze that is sweeping the nation! It is a great workout, the instructors are always enthusiastic and bubbly, the music is trendy and loud and most importantly, it is fun! Let Zumba be your “party before the party”. Check out our classes here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday with Christy and Gabe and let your party last all week long!

The Cure for Cancer! By Michael Omar
The other day I watched an awesome documentary called “The Beautiful Truth”. The film
follows a 15 year old kid whose mother has just passed and eventually finds his life going in a downward spiral. After flunking out of school, his father decides for his son to be home schooled. His first assignment was to research a controversial book called “A Cancer Therapy” by Max Gerson published in 1958. The book covers over 50 different case studies of terminally ill cancer patients that were all cured by diet alone. Wondering why he and the modern world were unaware of this information, the boy began to do his research. The documentary follows this kid and his journey in his pursuit for the truth as he interviews cancer survivors and thoroughly researches the subject.
This documentary got me thinking, “how come I’ve never heard of this type of treatment.” Since the book was published, thousands of more patients have been cured by the Gerson therapy. I think that’s evidence alone that there are alternative ways to go about things to be healthy. Obviously preventative health care is the easiest way. Simply by eating right, and exercising, one can stay healthy and disease free. But eating healthy has been difficult do to genetically modified food which is sold to us, fed to the livestock which they feed on and we end up eating. There even teaching fish to eat corn now! (If your oblivious to this info watch the documentary Food inc. )
I wish I was like all the other skeptics, and I also believed that the medical and food industries in the world were filled with honest people. Unfortunately, after continuous inhumane behavior by the big corporations as of lately, I have grown more and more weary of such honesty. I think when it comes down to it, the medical and food industries in the United States are profiting industries. The more sick people there are to take care of, the more profits there are for the multibillion dollar medical and pharmaceutical corporations.
I encourage everyone to watch this documentary and decide for yourself what to believe in. Are we being mislead? Basically is the question. I think it’s evident, that the majority of Americans are not healthy. The less healthy you are, the harder it is for the brain to function optimally, therefore making the general public dumb. There are toxins in our food, in our air, and in our water. What are we to do?

I spent some time back in the Midwest over the holiday and was overwhelmed by the positive feedback from friends (and some strangers too) about my newsletter and blog which has inspired me to write this message to you.
My message to you is: you can accomplish anything that you’ve…
